GLOBAL CONTEXT

Virtual and augmented reality is a promising technology, with a supporting data of growth and also decreasement in some cuatrimestres. This technology is opening new formats of content, experiential marketing, other ways to reach the education, new spaces for social interaction, and other potential markets unexplored.

The state of use of this technology change according to the accessibility of the price in the market, where Samsung Gear VR is the leader with 5 millions unit sales (source: roadtovr and CES 2017 keynote), followed by Sony Playstation VR with 3 millions (source: techradar and Playstation Blog) and then Facebook Oculus Go with 1.8 millions unit sales (source: vrfocus and SuperData Report).

Here is a Worldwide Forecast of unit shipments between 2017 to 2022 of headset for Virtual and Augmented Reality:

1. EMERGED TRENDS

After knew the data of this emerging tech, Amy Webb a quantitative futurist talks about tech trends for 2018, and what is coming next. She talks about virtual and augmented reality, and furthermore she explains subjects like mixed reality, artificial intelligence and blockchain:

2. IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCES IN VIRTUAL REALITY

My experience in VR starts from cero, and I only knew what movies had taught me.

2.1 Movies about VR

You can watch the last movie by Steven Spielberg: Ready Player One

2.2 TV shows about VR

On Netflix, you have a TV show about Virtual Reality called: Kiss me first

2.3 VR Games

Mario Kart is available for VR and you can enjoy it in London for 5 minutes with 9 euros each players and with HTC Vive headsets. If you are a super fan of Super Nintendo, imagine how can be this experience:

4. CASES APPLIED TO VR

4.1 National Geographic Documentaries

I leave you two immersive experiences, where National Geographic use the 360 degree video. Also, you can view them on your mobile phone.

If you want to see more VR experiences of National Geographic, click here.

4.2 Experiences on movies with Oculus Go and Samsung Gear VR

I used these headsets for living Jurassic World from inside and I almost got in shock. I had to take of the headset because I felt T-Rex so close to me, jajajaj.

Watch this video, but you should take the experience.

I also lived the experience with Samsung Gear VR, the free version of Jurassic World that you can delighted on Oculus Store, and I screamed gain.

NO SUITABLE FOR CARDIAC LIKE ME.

4.3 Experience with HTC Vive

I used this headset for living a experience on the top of mountain where a little dog robot appeared. Actually, when you touch the dog, your controllers vibrate and this action approach you to the reality. You should test it!

4.4 Experience with Oculus Rift

My experience with the Rift was fantastic due to the possibility of interaction, where it was a very friendly robot.

The goal of the game: to explore experiences through diskettes that the robot was giving you. These gifts generate a magic environment. At first, I felt a little clumsy using the controllers. Although later, I did not want to leave.

4.5 Data Visualization in VR

4.6 Data Analytics in Virtual Reality

Can you imagine doing reports using this technology.

4.8 Education and simulations in medicine with VR

Virtual Reality is being applied for training in medicine area.

New formats of learning are emerging.

VR applied for simulate surgery:

5. CASES APPLIED WITH AR

5.1 AR apps for Education

Body Planet use 3D animations and augmented reality for having a look into real organs and their functionalities.

Goal: to learn with diversion about the body human.

Body Planet

5.2 AR for News: The New York Times

If you want to know more about how The NYTimes is using augmented reality, click here.

5.3 AR applied to Sport and Data

Fox Sport start to use graphs with Augmented Reality for broadcasts.

Watch these two videos:

5.4 AR applied to Art

Art Gallery at Ontario, had a exhibition called Reblink.

Goal: to download the app, to point the paintings with your mobile/tablet and enjoy the AR experiences.

This was possible thanks to the studio of Mixed Reality called Impossible Things.

6. CASES APPLIED TO MIXED REALITY

6.1 Microsoft Hololens-Data visualization AR & MR

“The more dimensions we can visualize effectively, the higher are our chances of recognizing potentially interesting patterns, correlations, or outliers”.-George Donalek.

The analyzing of data and the extraction of insights become more difficult due to amount of data. Otherwise, AR technology look for the immersion in data for improving analysis.

IBM is developing IBM Immersive Insights through Microsoft Hololens headsets.

6.2 Magic Leap

These headsets promise to revolutionize the market and the possibilities to open new formats in mediums, new ways to generate engagement with people or brand and more things to come.

If someone missed the L.E.AP. Conference Keynote, you can watch it in the next link:

I also had the opportunity to try it, thanks to Virtual Voyagers and Uxer School, where I enjoyed the power of creating worlds in my own environment.

Magic Leap have they own guide of content and tutorials for designing and developing for these headsets.

6.3 MR for Games

If you are a fan of Angry Birds play, with Magic Leap you will have another perspective.

6.4 MR for Tourism

Do you want to know New Zealand, the airlines Air New Zealand has launched this familiar game for Magic Leap.

7. CHEAP HEADSETS OF VIRTUAL REALITY

If you have a Samsung: Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge +, S7 or Galaxy S7 Edge, you can now experience virtual reality.

If you do not want to expend too much, I recommend you to buy in a second hand shop, like CashConverter or Wallapop, where you will find prices between 20–40 euros. With controllers, it is going to be more expensive, but I bought mine for 42 euros.

8. WHERE TO STUDY DESIGN FOR VR

If you are a UX Designer or a person who loves tech, I recommend you the school UXER SCHOOL, where you will learn with the best of the area VIRTUAL VOYAGERS, BEEVA AND HIKARU.
