Senior and veteran UX designers suck
Ageism isn’t the problem, our self-sabotaging mindsets are.
I never called myself senior until I’ve clocked in 6 years of actual experience in the UX field. It was a heavy thing to do, because of the amount of judgement you’ll subject yourself to when you have the audacity to label yourself as one.
With my usual honest, yet seemingly discouraging and pessimistic themes in my writing, many people like to label me as a shit senior who is trying to gatekeep and dissuade people from joining the industry.
Sure, if that makes you sleep better at night, call me whatever you like.
I’ve always said I’m the bottom benchmark for senior product designers; I’m not quite there yet despite my almost seven years of experience. I have so much I don’t know about the design world holistically and I can only practice a limited amount of skills at one time as a single person. I’m not going to make excuses for myself, I have my shortcomings and I’m learning to fix them.
But till then, I know I suck and I’ll happily admit it.
Which brings me to my main point today; great senior designers today are a dying breed, and it’s affecting our industry in ways we absolutely detest.
