Everything new in iOS 16 for Product Designers and Design Engineers

Apple announced their annual OS updates during its WWDC 2022 event. Here’s everything you need to know, so you can update your apps with the latest new features and design changes.
Widgets on the Lock Screen

iOS 16 introduces an all-new Lock Screen that supports widgets similar to Apple Watch complications. They feature 3 different visualizations: Circular, Inline and Rectangular.

Widgets can also use 3 different color styles: full color, accented (one color) and vibrant (transparent). On iPhone, you can only use the vibrant color, it will change the tint based on your wallpaper.

The new widgets make use of WidgetKit in SwiftUI, and can be reused in both your iOS and Apple Watch app.

Live Activities

Another new feature on the Lock Screen is Live Activities. These are glanceable widgets that update in real time during the day. This can be your music player, a running timer, sport scores or the progress of your Starbucks order. It can be animated, so the progress is even more clearly visible.
As of now, Live Activities are not yet available, but it will be added to a later update of iOS 16.
