ChatGPT for designers

Potential ways designers can use generative AI to make our work even more exciting!

ChatGPT ideas are all over the internet. In a good way. Generative AI combo of ChatGPT, Dall-E and Midjourney have made all the 2023 trend reports that were published just a couple of months back sort of meaningless already :)

I thought I’ll put ChatGPT through a typical designer workflow. Workshops. Ideation. UX. Copy. User research. And the likes.

And I was amazed. Take a look.

“App/business name options for a kids weekend activity business”

“Marketing tagline”

“Brand logo options”

For this one I used Dall-E. You will see below for wireframe options as well, Dall-E is not there yet in terms of quality of outcome. But image based generative content generation is going to be a bit more challenging compared to text. So guess this will improve in near future.

Who are the competitors for kids weekend activity business in Sydney?

And this was interesting how we could potentially dig deeper for market and competitor research on our design engagements!

“Survey questions to better understand kids and parent needs when it comes to weekend activities for 5 to 10 year olds”

Now on to some user research support :)

Survey questions that one can pretty much use as-is for user research!

“Best iPhone app inspirations for ecommerce and kids category”

“Workshop ice-breaker activity ideas for 12 participants, preferably for 10–12 minutes”

I always struggle to choose that 1 best option for workshop activities. Now more ideas to the mix :) Love #10!

“Ideation workshop agenda”

But what about the agenda for the workshop? ChatGPT at least is able to help with a draft starting point.

“iPhone app product detail wireframe for an ecommerce brand”

Then I wanted to see if Dall-E was good enough to churn out wireframes. Maybe a hard push (for now, in Jan 2023). But am sure in the upcoming versions of Dall-E or other similar services we will get to see improved results.

“Copy for description for a swimming class that involves water games and is of 45-minute duration”

One of the areas ChatGPT is exceptionally strong is copy writing. There are quite a few examples being discussed online. But ChatGPT is extremely capable of producing multiple variants of the copy based on tone of voice, target audience etc.

A generic request:

Same request but for a specific target demography:

“User test questions for an app that allows parents to book weekend activities for their kids”

As you would have seen by now, one area where ChatGPT shines is the assistance mode — helping us in our workflow to make our life easier, efficient and giving us a starting point for things. Similar to survey questions — we can pretty much use the output as the starting point and extend/add and use the scripts!

“User story for checkout feature”

Haha. Wow. Now this is interesting as well. Not just the user story but non functional requirements as well for the product!

“Non-functional requirements for the iOS version of the app”

🙀

And then I thought what else do designers use the keyboard for and … design systems! And after a bit of trial and error got some surprising results.

“Write a concise design system documentation for iOS button to include a table with anatomy, tokens, and sample usage”

Now, this is mind-blowing ⚡ ️

Imagine someone working on their first design system project. Or designers who just would prefer to focus on what they love best — design, rather than documentation :)

After all these ‘day in the life of a designer’ scenarios … thought … why not ask ChatGPT pretty much the same question — “How can designers use generative AI?” And here you go!

A great summary. Categorised. I could have saved 30 minutes of my time writing this blog :)

The more time we spend on these platforms we are going to get infinitely better at searching the right way to generate rich content.

Phew! So that’s pretty much ChatGPT and Dall-E supporting branding, marketing content, ideation, workshop prep, user research tasks, copy writing, business analysis tasks, design systems, and code snippets! And these are just the obvious ones.

We are going to see a range of product features, new start-ups and new workflow processes flooding our community pretty soon. And alongside it improvements in governance, IP, standards to ensure better adoption going forward. In short — super promising start.

Glad to be riding the next big tech wave of the century! #generativeAI
