Life happens, and in that process, clutter happens too.

Not sure about others but I definitely can relate to it. Sometimes, I wonder that amidst our quest to strike the right balance between our personal and professional space, life becomes too cluttered.

Everything from our room to our mind becomes messy, cluttered, and unorganized. And, we have no idea when this clutter starts affecting our decisions, choices, and eventually our life because clutter isn’t just in your home, attic, garage, or office. It is also in your mind, and distracts you from the amazing things you are meant to do.
If you are looking out for some motivation, I’m sure this post would be of some help to you.
How to motivate yourself to get organized
This one is a million-dollar question everyone is seeking an answer to. I do believe that organizing is an ongoing journey not just one-time gig. You have to keep motivating yourself to keep things in place and your sanity intact.
The whole point of encouraging the act of organizing things is to make your life easier. When your life is easier, you can make the right decisions as you don’t have to spend time on setting up things and then act.
If you want to motivate yourself to work, first take things into perspective. Understand which part of your life needs some organizing — work, home, mental and then get your butt moving. As Sadiqua Hamdan, an entrepreneur, author, and personal growth expert said,
“Only when we acknowledge ourselves as we really are can we begin to take inventory of the physical, mental, and emotional clutter that no longer serves us. Then we can choose to no longer judge ourselves for what we’ve become and focus on who we’d like to be.”
Here are 9 effective ways to help you get organized and be your best productive self:
- Keep calm and start organizing
It can be overwhelming and intimidating to start when your room or work desk is filled with small little mountains made up of random things. Instead of procrastinating, get a good look at what needs to be done.
Make a to-do list and tape it to a place where you can see it frequently. Apart from making the process less overwhelming, it will push you to get into the act of organizing as early as possible.
2. Choose a day
Knowing what to do when is half the battle won. And, when it comes to finding motivation to get organized, just think and do. There would never be a perfect day to organize things, you have to find a day and make things perfectly organized.
What I do is that I mark a date at my work calendar after knowing how much work I’m supposed to be doing this week. And, then pick a day when I don’t have much going on.
Tip: It’s better to choose a time early in the day so that you can clean up the mess as the first thing and focus on other important tasks.
3. Be your own muse
Many people consider organizing as a chore or some extra work. They forget that every project needs a different organizing system. Start enjoying the process and look for some inspiration to remove clutter in your life.
Pinterest and home-decorating blogs are some places to start with. You can get ample ideas and clarity on finding the best way to organize stuff keeping your place in mind. Browse through some magazines, go window shopping and be your own muse.
4. Give a permanent home to everything
I mean this — literally. Place things where they should be so that whenever you need something you don’t have to dig a mountain with your hands. Oftentimes, we throw things here and there, whereas if we designate a specific place for each item, our life would be much easier and less complicated.
You can use spare cardboard boxes, drawers, side tables, or a tiny part of your closet to store and stack things. Just like you come back home every night, likewise keep things where they belong after you use them.
5. Keep like with like
When organizing a space, keep things as simple as possible. Don’t overcomplicate it. If you are into sketching or painting, keep your pencils, colors, brushes and drawing sheets nearby in an orderly fashion. And, as soon as you’re done with them, keep them at the same place.
Create an easily accessible space for things that go hand in hand or which are used in pairs such as scissors and tape, pencil and sharpeners to name a few.
6. Why don’t you invite someover over?
Nothing gives me more motivation to get organized than knowing I have some guests coming over. I guess it’s human tendency to present your house in the best possible manner to people when they come over. After all, one can make a lot about your personality by just having a quick glance at your house.
This technique works best if organizing doesn’t require more than a few hours. Otherwise, you might end up in an embarrassing situation.
7. Tune to your favorite playlist
There are times when music can do things that others can’t do — finding motivation to get organized might be one of them. If you are unable to get going, it’s time to groove to the tunes of your favorite playlist and start organizing things.
Play something that puts you in motion — rock, jazz, hip hop, rap as the options are endless. The idea is to get develop some pace and find momentum to not stop unless you’re done with it.
8. Get everyone involved
Who says cleaning and decluttering can’t be fun? Nothing is more fun when a bunch of like-minded people get together to make more space and organize things. You can make teams or go solo and get to the process.
If you wish to declutter your workplace, then analyze, strategize, and organize. Analyze the space and things. Strategize to figure out how you want the space to be and organize things to where they belong.
9. Look at the bigger picture
It might be debatable but I strongly believe that getting organized can really contribute to success and a better you. We lose so many precious minutes and energy on finding usual stuff everyday. However, if we just take a minute or two to put things at their right place, we can save much time and energy.
When you combine these factors, you start taking better decisions, become more accountable, and create a life that is organized, happy, and blissful.
Organizing is a journey
Most of us consider this organizing thing as a one-time job whereas it is no less than a journey in itself. There are many organizational, work management tools, and productivity apps that can help you set small goals and get organized.
Finding ways to get and stay motivated is almost more important than organizing itself. The above tips are just some of the ways I keep myself motivated. I would love to know how you stay organized at work and home.
Till then Happy organizing!
